What do you want of a smartphone? What will your future smartphone look like?
As for ZTE, they have already a winner and in 2017, expect to see a futuristic phone with eye-tracking technology, as well as, self-adhesive capability for more stable position, especially when using the eye-tracking feature.
Way back in August, the company launched Project CSX competition. This attempts to crowdsource ideas for their future projects. ZTE asked users to submit entries on what device they want the company to build in 2017. Out of the overwhelming entries, they came up with the shortlist last September. Finally, the winner is the Eye-Tracking, Self-Adhesive Phone.
In a press statement announcing the winner of the Project CSX, Lixin Cheng, Chairman and CEO of ZTE USA, said, “We are overwhelmed with the amount of consumer participation and positive reception to Project CSX. As the first smartphone manufacturer to take on crowdsourcing its next mobile device from start to finish, we are proud of how this project pushed the envelope, and that consumers from around the world have chosen to be part of this industry-disrupting process.”
The winning entry suggests a 5.5-inch smartphone with the eye-tracking feature. This allows users to give commands to the phone by simply staring at a particular part of the screen – a button perhaps. Hence, if you are reading a text and you want to magnify or scroll, you can simply stare the buttons corresponding to what you want and you can navigate the whole text, hands-free. Additionally, if you want to, say rewind a video, you need not lift a finger. Simply stare at the button on your screen and you can get whatever you needed.
How it works?
As explained by the winning entry on ZTE website, the eye-tracking system of the phone consists of, “two laser-focusing cameras, one on the top and one on the bottom. These two cameras can simply interact with the user by capturing the user’s pupils’ movement in a vertical dimension.”
This technology is not yet widely used on smartphones. Let’s see whether ZTE can successfully carry this amazing feature in its 2017 flagship smartphone.
What does self-adhesive mean?
Self-adhesive means the smartphone always finds its stable position for better utilization of the eye-tracking feature. The winning entry suggests the use of a medical grade silicone (Polydimethylsiloxane). This material will provide adhesive back cover for the device.
Another feature suggested is the split-screen technology merely for multitasking.
Will ZTE be successful in this quest? And if, indeed, it can create such futuristic smartphone, are you willing to have one? How will the company approach the project?
Interested and excited about this? Why don’t you subscribe to get updates about the upcoming flagship from ZTE?
