As the last quarter of the year has started, reports and rumors made rounds on the internet regarding the upcoming high-end smartphones in 2017. In fact, not just one, but four of the biggest names in the industry are rumored to be working on their flagships for next year.
From patents, renders to leaked images, we compiled the information on Galaxy S8, iPhone 8, LG G6 and OnePlus 4. So, without further ado, we will introduce you to the anticipated smartphones next year.
iPhone 8 – Completely Bezel-less Display with OLED Screen
It seems that both Samsung and Apple are working towards an edge-to-edge smartphone display for their flagship device. In fact, this week, a new patent has convinced fans and avid Apple supporters that the upcoming iPhone – iPhone 8 – will have an edge-to-edge display. From the leaked images, unofficial renders, and now the patent, it seems that Apple is really taking the matter seriously, and hopefully we can see a completely bezel-less iPhone in 2017.
The patent, with number 9,466,653 for “Electronic devices with display-integrated light sensors”, which was granted on Tuesday, details everything about the procedure and alternative ways to implement in-display light sensors.
Not just the bezel-less design, but it’s also expected that the next iPhone will have an OLED screen. But, it’s not yet confirmed whether it will be iPhone 8, or there will be iPhone 7S next year and the new design will be coming the year after, 2018.
Expect to have updates about iPhone 8 in the days to come. So, for now, these speculations and rumors will remain such unless Apple confirms them.
Samsung Galaxy S8 – Edge-to-edge display, New AI Assistant
Following the disaster with its Note 7, surely Samsung will make it up to its fans with its upcoming high-end smartphone in 2017. While it’s Apple that was reported to have the patent on edge-to-edge display, Samsung is also working towards making its upcoming flagship a complete bezel-less phone.
Aside from the edge-to-edge display, it might also come with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 830, or its very own Exynos 8995, as well as 4K display. Furthermore, there were also rumors that the upcoming Galaxy S8 will have a powerful AI assistant, given that the company has recently purchased Viv. Viv’s mission is to make an AI assistant even better than Siri. So, perhaps, in order to redeem itself and the trust of its consumers, Samsung has to go extra mile to do that quickly and effectively.
The earliest that we can see the new design will be in the first quarter next year, during the Mobile World Congress. But, we have to wait for the final word from Samsung. As for now, stay tuned for more updates.
LG G6 – Supports wireless charging
Given the tepid reception of this year’s flagship smartphone, LG G5, LG needs to do something interesting for their high-end smartphone in 2017.
Yesterday, LG revealed Quick Wireless Charging Pad. This 15W Pad works with Wireless Power Consortium’s Qi charging standard. It can charge a completely empty battery to 50% in less than 30 minutes.
What’s the pad for?
It is very interesting that LG has this pad, where in fact LG G5 doesn’t support wireless charging. So, maybe, just maybe, the upcoming LG G6 will be capable of wireless charging, as Samsung Galaxy S7, its rival, has been already capable of.
The wireless charging pad is said to be available in the US, Europe and Australia this mid-October. As for the LG G6, it is expected to be announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain next year, starting February 27.
There is only a little information about LG G6, hence, stay tuned and subscribe to our newsletter to get updates.
It seems that we wouldn’t see OnePlus 4 already early next year. Rumors and even ‘trusted’ supply chain source speaking to GizmoChina, said that the Chinese company is planning to make some changes to OnePlus 3, first. According to the source, it might update to Snapdragon 821, a much faster processor and replacing AMOLED screen to LCD, but the design remains the same.
The company is struggling to keep up with the demand of the phone, as we could remember, the invite-only policy of the company was not implemented for the OnePlus 3. They can hardly produce enough OnePlus 3 units given the shortage in the AMOLED supply. Perhaps, a OnePlus 3S or OnePlus 3 Plus will be revealed before OnePlus 4.
OnePlus 4 will surely be revealed next year, but it’s not clear when. Techradar contacted OnePlus, and a spokesman said, “OnePlus can’t confirm anything that doesn’t come directly from OnePlus’ official channels”.
Take all these with a pinch of salt and stay tuned for more updates.
